As Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Sharfstein was a strong public health advocate who was dedicated to improving the agency’s transparency and the safety of medical products and food.  He inherited a dysfunctional agency and he made measurable progress in cleaning up the mess.  His efforts have saved lives and those of us who care about patient safety and public health are very sorry to see him leave.
